FGM (Khatna / Khafz) Persists In Bohra India – UK Politicians Can Help To Stop It

Hilary Burrage

The practice of female genital mutilation in India remains little known – not least because the Bohra community which continues with it insists on silence about what they call ‘Khatna’ (male or female ‘circumcision’) or ‘Khafz’ (explicitly the female version). But slowly this harmful traditional practice, like early ‘marriage’ in wider Indian society, is being exposed; and now some outspoken Bohra women want the international community to support their #EndFGM demands.
British politicians can add considerable weight to this campaign.

Breaking – Ireland will block #Brexit deal if #MayDUP deal goes ahead

SKWAWKBOX

In a huge – and possibly mortal – blow for Tory hopes of delaying the collapse of their ‘weak and wobbly’ minority government, Ireland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney has told Irish TV station RTE that the Irish Republic will not support any Brexit deal (encompassing, among other things, any free-trade agreement) if the UK does not ‘fully’ protect the Good Friday Agreement (GFA) and the peace process in Northern Ireland:

As there is no conceivable way that the Tories can do a deal with the DUP (Democratic Unionist Party) withoutthreatening the peace process by forsaking the UK government’s pledged impartiality, this amounts to a declaration that Ireland will veto any Brexit deal if a Tory-DUP deal goes ahead.

Putting Theresa May and her advisors in an impossible situation.

A legal challenge to any ‘MayDUP’ deal is already in preparation on the grounds that it would breach the…

What The MSM Isn’t Telling You About The Grenfell Tower Blaze

Enemy In A State

Further to my post yesterday:

In One Of The Richest Areas Of The Country, Neglected, Poor People Burned To Death In Thier Homes—Welcome To Britain 2017″

It has come to my attention that the mainstream media has all but blacked out one key fact about the fatal Grenfell Tower blaze. With the BBC, in particular, leading the way by silencing residents deeply embedded in the ongoing struggle against Kensington and Chelsea council.

Although barely reported in this country — the US’ CNN highlighted this key fact at the top of their article about the tragic, fatal blaze:

CNN

While it has commonly been reported that the building recently under went £8.6 million in upgrades, carried by private contractor Rydon Construction — the facts about the planned £67 million “jewels….of a regeneration scheme” have been — to the best of knowledge — mostly left out of UK coverage.

Apart from the…

Government to spend £1.3 million on sprinkler system in parliament – but claim not enough money for tower blocks

Pride's Purge

Due to central government cuts, local authorities cannot afford to install sprinkler systems in tower blocks full of families.

According to experts, authorities with greater concentrations of disadvantaged population groups have suffered faster or deeper cuts to fire safety in the community, particularly those in urban areas.

The same government, however, thinks it’s very important that sprinkler systems are installed in their own workplace:

Despite austerity, the same government can find £1.3 million to install a sophisticated sprinkler system in parliament:

Because the government thinks some people’s lives are more important than others?

Namely, their own?

In law, if May can’t pass #QueensSpeech, #Corbyn AUTOMATICALLY becomes PM

SKWAWKBOX

no 10The Tories announced today that Theresa May’s ‘Queen’s Speech’ programme for government has been postponed from its expected date of 19 June – clearly because they have so far been unable to reach agreement with the Democratic Unionists (DUP), who are queasy about the prospect of going into an unpopular government against the clear wish of many British people.

Even the possibility of a Tory-DUP deal has raised tensions and fears in Northern Ireland, with experts asserting that the collaboration between the two parties puts the ‘Good Friday Agreement’ at serious risk, threatening the fragile peace process.

In spite of this, the Tories persist in pursuing such a deal for their own narrow gain,

They have attempted to justify this tactic by claiming it’s ‘for the good of the country’ and that Britain would be destabilised, with no clear path of transition to a Labour government when the parliamentary…

Election survival for mentals

Elections are frightening times for those of us who need the safety net the state is supposed to provide. Everyone is impacted by political decisions, but for those of us who rely on the NHS to keep us alive and on benefits to keep rooves over our heads, elections remind us of our powerlessness and our vulnerability. If you have someone in your life who’s chronically ill or disabled, get in touch with them this week if you can. It’s a good time to be reminding people they’re not alone.

I had a suicidal crisis just after the 2015 election and not long after the Brexit vote, so I’ve been thinking about how I can get ready for Thursday night and Friday morning. I know Labour have been doing better in the polls, but I’m not getting my hopes up – I was blindsided by the results before. This time…

Healing from trauma is an unlayering process

Beyond Meds: Alternatives to Psychiatry

Healing from trauma as well as the waking up process, in general, is often experienced as an unlayering process. Lately I’ve been revisiting the oldest wounding again. It’s been a doozy. It’s got correlates in the body (and shows up as chronic illness via the psych drug damage–everything matters and everything is connected!) and so I’ve not been feeling well either. It’s bringing up all the stuff about the system and healers that played into my even earlier wounding. These are my latest spontaneous utterances from twitter…shared here with some editing for clarification.

tweets from my twitter timeline:

The perpetrating healer should be an archetype that’s routinely discussed in circles of any kind of helping professional.

The abuses of the perpetrating healer become more and more subtle and (even) sophisticated as the healer becomes more aware…ugly razor’s edge…the sensitive too gets sucked into the dynamic but can watch…
